WHAT WE DO
Little Woods is a 501(c)3 nonprofit sanctuary located in Central Michigan. Founded in 2018 by Molly and Ryan Gardner, our mission is to provide lifelong care for neglected, abused, and at risk animals, while educating the public on animal welfare.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
We are dedicated to providing the best care possible for the animals who call Little Woods home. Our residents come from a variety of backgrounds and situations with one main thing in common, they need help. Over the years we have partnered with countless agencies and rescues in order to provide a soft place to land for animals in need. Primarily we focus on farmed animals, specifically individuals who are high risk and not suitable for placement in private homes. Some of the animals who come here have significant medical requirements, while others need somewhere to heal emotionally from their trauma. We have welcomed individuals from hoarding cases, criminal case surrenders, and for many as the last chance at life. Each new intake is evaluated based on the circumstances as well as the resources we have available. While most rescues operate on the basis of adoption and foster programs, sanctuaries offer permanent placement and commit to providing lifelong care for each individual. So we must consider the long term financial impact as well as the commitment of resources to make sure their needs are met. If you would like to help make sure we are able to continue this work please consider making a tax deductible donation or signing up to volunteer.
What we believe
From pigeons to ponies all animals deserve medical care by qualified veterinarians
Everyone receives individualized care and diets to meet their personal needs
Clean safe living spaces with access to shelter
Autonomous living. With the exception of medical treatment and necessary care no one is forced to interact with anyone
Appropriate enrichment and stimulation are keys to happiness
Everyone deserves a chance to thrive no matter their limitations or abilities
We provide a safe place for all beings to heal, including humans
Animals are individuals not commodities and compassion should extend to all areas of our lives
